Primary aluminum smelting is one of the most electricity-intensive industrial processes on earth — smelters were sited specifically where huge, reliable, low-cost power was available, and built with electrical infrastructure to match. When a smelter closes, that power position doesn't disappear.
Why smelter sites are unusually well suited
Smelters typically draw power measured in the hundreds of megawatts — an order of magnitude beyond most industrial facilities. That means the substations, transmission ties, and often dedicated generation contracts serving the site were sized for genuinely enormous, continuous loads: precisely the load profile an AI training cluster needs.
Many smelter sites were also located near hydroelectric or other low-cost generation specifically because of the aluminum industry's power sensitivity — a siting logic that maps closely onto where compute buyers want to be today.
Physical characteristics that carry over
Beyond the power position, former smelter sites commonly offer:
- Massive, column-free potroom buildings with heavy crane capacity
- Existing heavy industrial electrical distribution throughout the site
- Large contiguous land parcels, often with room for phased expansion
- Rail and often port or barge access for equipment logistics
